Medical emergencies don’t follow a schedule, and finding the right provider during odd hours can be a challenge. To address this critical issue, I developed a mobile app designed to offer immediate access to emergency medical services, even during late hours when most providers are unavailable. This app stands out not only because of its life-saving potential but also due to the innovation it brings to the healthcare sector, winning six prestigious awards, including NASSCOM 2016.

The app helps users locate medical service providers in real-time, provides a secure payment gateway, and ensures seamless transactions via an escrow system that ensures funds are only released once the situation is under control.

Challenge: Ensuring 24/7 Access to Emergency Medical Services

Healthcare providers and hospitals often have restricted working hours, leaving patients in critical situations without quick access to the necessary medical assistance. In emergencies, time is of the essence, and even small delays can make a significant difference in outcomes.

Several challenges made this project particularly complex:

  • Real-Time Availability of Medical Providers: The app needed to feature a robust, real-time search engine that could display emergency service providers who were available at odd hours.

To tackle the unique problems faced by users in medical emergencies, I designed an app that focused on accessibility, trust, and immediacy.

Key Features of the App:

  • Real-Time Search for Providers: The app integrates a powerful search engine that lists only those healthcare providers offering emergency services at odd hours. Patients can filter providers based on the type of emergency service they need—whether it's an ambulance, emergency doctor, or urgent care center.
  • Instant Payment Gateway: During a medical emergency, every minute counts, so the app includes a secure, user-friendly payment gateway. Users can make instant payments to book services without delays, speeding up the process of securing help.
  • Escrow Payment System: To safeguard both the patient party and the service provider, an escrow system was integrated. Once the emergency service is booked, the payment is held securely in escrow. The funds are only released after the medical professional or service provider has arrived and resolved the situation to the satisfaction of the patient party.
  • Location-Based Service Matching: Using GPS tracking, the app matches users with the nearest available emergency providers, ensuring that help is dispatched as quickly as possible.


Working Process

Step-by-Step Development

Project Consultation and Requirement Gathering

I worked closely with the stakeholders to fully understand the challenges that patients face during odd-hour emergencies. The core objective was to create a reliable system that could provide immediate access to emergency services and ensure financial security for both parties involved.

UI/UX Design:

During the design phase, my focus was on creating an intuitive and minimalistic interface, understanding that users might be under stress during emergencies. The design featured clear navigation, prominent call-to-action buttons, and instant access to vital functions like searching for nearby providers, booking services, and making payments.

Frontend and Backend Development

  • Frontend Development: I used React Native to ensure that the app was available on both Android and iOS platforms, optimizing the code for responsiveness and speed. The interface was kept lightweight, with quick-loading screens and minimal distractions to provide users with essential information quickly.
  • Backend Development: The backend was powered by Node.js, designed to handle real-time data for service availability and location-based provider matching. To ensure the app could scale effectively, I integrated Firebase, which supported real-time updates and synchronized service availability status across the app.

Secure Payment and Escrow Integration:

The payment gateway was developed using Stripe to allow for immediate, secure transactions. The escrow system was built using smart contracts, ensuring that payments would be held until services were rendered, which helped foster trust between the users and medical providers.

Location-Based Matching with GPS Integration:

For location tracking, I integrated Google Maps and GPS services to enable accurate distance calculations between patients and emergency providers. The app also offered real-time tracking once a provider was dispatched, allowing users to see exactly when help would arrive.

Testing and Optimization:

The app underwent rigorous testing in both simulated environments and real-world scenarios. I worked closely with emergency service providers to ensure that the system functioned smoothly during actual emergencies. Additionally, beta users provided feedback, which allowed me to optimize the user experience.
